We all...
have something we're passionate about.
Maybe that 'something' is spending hours cultivating your cucumber garden. It's possible that nothing brings you joy like making blanket forts and hiding in them until someone finds you and makes you come out. Maybe it's writing.
And whether you've been writing for ten weeks or ten days, you know something about what you're doing. You've got knowledge to share with others. Our goal was to help share that knowledge - compile it in a big book of advice and motivation - and hand it to you.
It started out pretty small. Olivia and I hung out at a coffeeshop one day, and our thought process went something like this...
Olivia: *sips coffee* you know, writing about writing is always fun
Caroline: *dumps more sugar into coffee* true. we could write a writing curriculum - like for homeschoolers.
Olivia: *starts doodling on paper* my mom's been telling us to do that for years.
Caroline: *tries coffee, recoils and reaches for the cream* ya know, we could see if [this one person] wanted to write the chapter about world building, 'cause we both obviously have problems with that.
Olivia: *doodles have turned into the actual Mona Lisa, how is she so good* ya know, I know some other people...
Caroline: *coffee is now mostly cream-colored, she is satisfied, gulps* WE COULD SEE IF OUR FRIENDS FROM GO TEEN WRITERS + TWITTER + THE BLOG WORLD WANTED TO CONTRIBUTE
Olivia: *screaming* AN INTERNATIONAL WRITING RESOURCE
Caroline: *throws coffee across room* BY TEENS, FOR TEENS
Everyone in the coffee shop: *staring, obviously in awe of us* you go, crazy writer people
Olivia: *waggles eyebrows* you know what we need
Caroline: *accidentally sips the cream instead of the coffee, doesn't even notice* a google doc
Olivia: *already is sharing the google doc with me* yes
....Umm. Yup. That's more or less how it went. The idea snowballed, as ideas tend to do. Now we have a 327-page book, with over 60 people from 11 different countries telling their stories. We couldn't do it without everyone who's helping in the background - our amazing team of editors, the marketing peeps, and our blog team. Collaboration is vital to both the production and the writing of Project Canvas, and it's been one of the most amazing things so far.
Project Canvas released on November 15th, 2018. We may not have a cucumber garden, or blanket forts, but we do have words from Sierra Abrams (The Color Project) on how to find the heart of your story. You wanted theme advice from Audrey Caylin? Or tips on how to blog from Hannah Sophia Lin? It's here. (And also here, on our blog!)
